History
The greyhound was a breed of dog that was introduced in Europe around more than 3500 years ago. Up until the late 1500's the law stated that only noblemen could own and hunt with greyhounds .Queen Elizabeth after her ascension to the thrown abolished the age-old law and thus the first rules of greyhound coursing were born. After the change in laws dog racing was dubbed as the "Sport of Queens."
On July 24, 1926 the first greyhound race was organized at Belle Vue Stadium. This race had seven participants and the object of the race was to catch the electrical hare. Thus was born the modern form of greyhound racing as opposed to the Elizabethan sport of greyhound hunting.
Regulation and Animal Cruelty
Greyhound racing in Great Britain is regulated by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain. To many the whole ideals of the sports seem very out of place and cruel. Hence the Greyhound Board is there to regulate not only the sport but norms that ensure that no animal involved is administered any sort of cruelty.
Hence we find that one such norm ensures that no greyhound is ever kept at the tracks and is kept with the owner or instructor instead at a proper kennel or home.
Soon after the first race in 1926, greyhound tracks have been built all over the United Kingdom keeping into consideration the ever growing popularity of the sport. As of today dog racing is a firm favorite amongst audiences not only in Britain but all over the world such as Australia, Ireland, United States of America, South Africa and so on.
