Italy
at night is moderately safe if you are in a
group. For a solitary tourist, there have been
instances of mugging and some roughing up. Avoid
stepping out after 9 pm. Make sure that you
circumvent groups of youngsters lounging around
by the roadside.
Beware of pickpockets especially in Rome. Leave
your valuables and passports in the hotel safe,
if there is one. If you are forced to carry
them with you, carry them in a body pouch. Do
not carry more cash than you need to use in
the day and always split it up in various pockets
rather than keep them in a wallet.
Do not stop and talk to any stranger who wants
to give you an African Charm for free. These
people force you to get the friendship bands
tied to your wrist saying that they are free
and then end up demanding money. If they pester
you, simply raise your voice and start attracting
attention.
The
police are usually nearby at busy squares and
will come to your help immediately. Best would
be to ignore and carry on when someone accosts
you like this.
